Build Your E-Bike With Confidence
Installing e-bike components doesn't require an engineering degree, but it does require patience, the right tools, and a systematic approach. This guide walks you through the key installation steps.
Tools You'll Need
Before starting, gather: wire strippers, crimping tool, multimeter, hex key set, torque wrench, zip ties, and electrical tape or heat shrink tubing.
Step 1: Mount the Motor
For hub motors, lace the motor into your wheel or use a pre-laced wheel. Ensure the axle is properly seated in the dropouts and torque the axle nuts to spec. For mid-drives, follow the manufacturer's bracket instructions carefully.
Step 2: Install the Battery
Mount the battery securely to the frame using the provided bracket. Ensure it's locked and won't shift during riding. Route the battery cable away from moving parts.
Step 3: Mount the Controller
The controller generates heat, so mount it in a ventilated location. Many builders mount it inside the frame triangle or under the downtube. Secure it firmly to prevent vibration damage.
Step 4: Wire the System
Connect motor phase wires (matching colors), hall sensor wires, battery connector, throttle, PAS sensor, and display. Double-check all connections before powering on.
Step 5: Test Before Riding
Power on the system and test throttle response, PAS function, and brakes before your first ride. Check for any error codes on the display.
